CEBU, Philippines -- March 16, 2007 -- Brian Bryce relates his reasons for buying the Lenovo ThinkPad T60 wide-screen laptop in an article published in NotebookReview.com.
His main reason, according to Mr. Bryce, for getting the T60 WS was the laptop's reliability, durability, excellent performance, and high-resolution screen.
The specifications of Mr. Bryce' T60 WS, as ordered from Buy.com for $1,478, include:
* 15.4 Inch WSXGA+ LCD * T7200 2.00GHz Core 2 Duo * 1GB RAM * ATI X1400 128MB Graphics * DVD burner * 120GB 5400RPM HD * a/b/g/n wireless adapter * Bluetooth * Fingerprint Scanner * 6-cell battery * Windows XP Professional * three-year warranty
The 6.06-pound T60 WS also comes with basic port selections USB, VGA, ethernet, modem, and headphone and microphone jacks. The system has both CardBus and ExpressCard slots.
Mr. Bryce notes that the T60 doesn't ship with an IEEE 1394 and a card reader.
Mr. Bryce uses his T60 WS mainly for simple office work, digital photography work, storage, and technical computations. "The extra screen space of the T60 WS is particularly helpful in the last two tasks," he says.
The T60 WS has nice hinges, nice simple looks, and a solid keyboard, Mr. Bryce observes. The unit was also well put together. "It was far more solid than any [Hewlett-Packard] or Dell [notebook] I had touched in many years," Mr. Bryce remarks. He did notice some flex in the panels on the sides of the keyboard and the area near the fingerprint reader though.
The T60's keyboard, Mr. Bryce relates, gives good tactile feedback and is light, albeit "clicky," to type on.
Mr. Bryce is especially pleased with the high 1680x1050 native screen resolution of the 15.4-inch LCD display. He finds the screen evenly lit with no dead pixels and minimal light leakage.
The fan, Mr. Bryce notes, runs a fair amount of the time and makes a high-pitched noise when the laptop is running on battery power. The noise, however, is common on Intel 945 based laptops, Mr. Bryce comments.
The T60 WS' battery life is average for its class, according to Mr. Bryce. The T60 WS lasts approximately 2.5 hours under minimal usage such as surfing the internet and playing music. When running extensive processes, Mr. Bryce cautions that the battery life should be dramatically shorter.
The T60 WS incurred this notebook time under benchmarking software SuperPi:
SuperPi (2 million places) Notebook Times
Notebook Processor Time -------- --------- ---- Current Lenovo ThinkPad T60 2.00GHz Core 2 Duo 1m 04s Dell Inspiron e1705 2.00GHz Core 2 Duo 1m 02s Lenovo ThinkPad T60 2.00GHz Core Duo 1m 18s Toshiba A100 2.00GHz Core Duo 1m 18s Samsung X60 1.66GHz Core Duo 1m 29s Lenovo ThinkPad T43 1.86GHz Pentium M 1m 45s Sony VAIO FS680 1.86GHz Pentium M 1m 53s HP dv5000z 2.00GHz Sempron 3300+ 2m 02s
"So far the ThinkPad T60 15.4 inch wide screen has been exactly what was called for," Mr. Bryce says. "It is bulky to carry ... however, it is not possible to have a nice big usable screen and perfect portability. I can easily see this laptop lasting five years of heavy use and being retired for performance, not reliability issues."
