HONG KONG, China -- March 16, 2007 -- Acer Inc. expects to displace Lenovo as the third largest PC vendor this year, AFX News Limited reports.
Acer Inc. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer J.T. Wang predicted that Acer's PC shipments would rise by 30% to 40% this year. Consequently, he is "sure" that Acer will overtake Lenovo in 2007 quarterly global PC shipments. In addition, Mr. Wang is certain that Acer's revenue will grow by a double-digit percentage this year, AFX relates.
Acer currently holds the fourth spot in worldwide PC shipments, with Dell Inc. and Hewlett-Packard Co. holding the top two positions.
Lenovo might ship more this first quarter, Mr. Wang told AFX News, but Acer is bound to overtake the Chinese company in the second or third quarter. Mr. Wang added that there is a 50-50 chance that Acer will ship more computers than Lenovo for the whole year.
Mr. Wang attributes most of Acer's expected growth to the Taiwanese PC manufacturer's pact with Best Buy Co., AFX notes. He believes the deal will help make Acer's U.S. sales comprise 20% to 22% of the company's total revenues for 2007.
Mr. Wang also related that Acer is scouting for new acquisitions this year to aid in boosting the company's global market share. "We are looking at some candidates which we want to pick up," AFX News quotes Mr. Wang. Acer will endeavor to acquire one PC company this year, Mr. Wang disclosed. With or without an acquisition, however, Acer will still significantly increase its 2007 global share, he maintained.
The Acer CEO did not reveal which PC companies Acer is eyeing. The Taiwanese PC manufacturer could buy Gateway, Inc., DigiTimes relates in a separate report, citing industry sources. If Acer purchases Gateway, the company could increase its global share to 8% or 9%, according to Taiwanese PC players. Mr. Wang though has stated that Acer is not interested in Gateway.
Gateway, the third largest PC supplier in the U.S. market, has a market value of about $288,000,000, according to DigiTimes.
