SYDNEY, Australia -- March 14, 2007 -- AT&T Williams lead driver Nico Rosberg expects his Formula 1 team to charge ahead this season thanks to the team's $30,000,000 sponsorship deal with Lenovo, ZDNet Australia reports.
Mr. Rosberg told ZDNet that his team uses approximately 130 laptops and 270 desktop computers, courtesy of Lenovo and former technology partner Hewlett-Packard. He disclosed that AT&T Williams plans to transition to an all-Lenovo PC set-up. The team currently uses around 20 Lenovo Thinkpad T60s.
AT&T Williams, ZDNet says, uses the Lenovo computers in recording telemetry data and in racetrack communications. There is a constant wireless transmission of data between the cars and the team during a race, Mr. Rosberg said. The Williams team's computers process more than 7TB of data every season or more than 1TB of date per racecar, he added.
According to Lenovo Chief Executive Officer Alan Munro, data from the engine and a car is downloaded to a notebook computer before the car is started. An engineer stands watch to make sure all parameters are within limits, Mr. Munro related. If all conditions are satisfied, a spark is applied and the engine is started.
The use of Lenovo computers prevents damage to the team's racecars during the start-up process, Mr. Munro explained. "If the engine is started without appropriate oil pressure, for example, the engine is ruined and the bearings won't survive."
